It's common when the kids are really little to do family pictures a few times a year. Every month it seems like your little one has grown and changed so much! A new skill is always right around the corner from pushing up, to rolling over, sitting, standing, walking, and more. The days are long but those moments go SO fast. Somewhere between the preschool phase and the teen years, the family photoshoots become less frequent. Full sessions become mini sessions and holiday card updates. Annual family pictures start skipping a year or two. Sports, activities, homework, and soon teen part time jobs take up all your family's time and before you know it, it's been years since your last family pictures!
Now, as you stand here on the verge of college applications, trade licensing exams, and planning with your senior for life after high school, you realize these moments home together as a family are dwindling. Now is the time to finally schedule family pictures. Now is the time to freeze this moment in time and print it for your wall so you can enjoy these faces every time you come into the house. So how do you do this? How do you convince your teens to get dressed up and hang with the family for photos? What kind of photo session is best for family pictures with teenagers? We break down options below so you can find the perfect fit for your family!

Including Family in Senior Pictures
This is the most common option that families choose with Westerville Senior Photography. It's quite an efficient use of time, since the senior is already planning to be dressed and ready for photos, and it's super easy to add in a few more family members to the session. We do not charge extra to include parents or siblings in senior pictures, but we do want to make sure we plan the right amount of time to design your perfect photo session with family!
Mini Photoshoot for Family Pictures with Teenagers
A traditional photoshoot is usually an hour (or more for senior pictures) but it's possible your family doesn't need this much time. Lucky Family Photography has written a lot about this and what family circumstances might be a match for a mini photoshoot vs a full photoshoot. Typically speaking, smaller groups with no pets, one outfit, less picky on location might be fine with a mini session. Mini photoshoots are typically offered back to back on select dates at select locations only.

Full Family Photoshoot with Teens
A regular family photoshoot can be customized just for your family. This would be your choice of location that fits your vision, may include multiple outfit changes or pets, and can be scheduled any time. The benefit to doing a full family session is that your photographer can work with you to create your dream session based on your specific needs and what you want to walk away with after the session. This allows more time to design and create specific wall art, for example.
Schedule the Family Pictures with Your Senior
Let this be your sign to schedule the session. Book the photographer. Pick the outfits. Create the photos. You won't be less busy next year so set aside the time and make it happen! You will be glad you did!
