Olentangy Orange Student - Community Service in Delaware, Ohio

We are very excited to showcase this very special and giving student! Meet Kylie: an Olentangy Orange student (technically ALMOST a senior) with a heart for making the world a better place. We may be on Summer break, but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to serve her community!

Through the Global Scholars program, she was prompted to research global issues and implement solutions locally. Kylie discovered that the global stigma around menstruation makes adequate supplies hard for some women to access. Through interviews with school officials, she learned that there are students who have difficulty obtaining these necessary and expensive supplies even in her own school district. Her initial proposal was to ensure that all bathrooms at Olentangy Orange Middle School were stocked so that students had access whenever needed. Unfortunately, her plans were halted when schools unexpectedly closed down last school year.

Rather than lose momentum or stop altogether, Kylie took this as an opportunity to pivot to something slightly different that still solves the problem. (How cool is that?!) She began collecting menstrual supplies to benefit the Delaware Common Ground Free Store! Their mission is to provide basic needs for people free of charge, which makes this the perfect place for her to continue her vision of erasing period poverty.

Kylie understands that worldwide change starts locally, and she has taken action to do just that! Now she’s asking for your help to make a difference in the lives of local women and girls who may not have access to menstrual supplies. Please condsider donating unopened packages of tampons, maxi pads, Diva Cups, and underwear by contacting Kylie at the email above. She will be doing a local pickup on June 30, 2020, and every item truly helps someone.

Congratulations, Kylie, on being our June honored student! You’ve demonstrated leadership and initiative while solving a problem that is not often discussed. We look forward to seeing great things from you throughout your upcoming senior year and beyond!
